Sure, there are exceptions and there are some decent retail technicians. At that point, why not just hire a bunch of monkeys? Basically, they had to follow a flowchart, and if a certain number of issues or a certain type of issues existed, they had to take specific actions. I remember talking to my friend who used to work at Best buy about that, and he told me that the problem was that the repair it required was something they weren't supposed to do. I had her get the machine back, and she brought it to the restaurant where she worked, and I had it fixed in 5 minutes. I remember years ago, there was a waitress at a restaurant where I was a regular customer, and she was telling me how to buy told her that they had to back up her data and erase her computer because of a relatively simple issue. you can have a perfectly good technician who goes to work for Best buy because I guess he can't find a job somewhere else for some reason, and he can't use most of what he knows because there are things he isn't allowed to do. To make it worse, they (at least they used to) what is essentially A playbook of sanctioned operations. They aren't the worst on average, but they're pretty freaking dumb much of the time. As somebody who has been in this field since the '90s, I have been consistently disgusted by the competence of retail technicians, notably best buy. Most retail computer technicians aren't exactly descendants of the gods of technology. Best buy does indeed outsource their so-called level 3 recovery. Next, I have gotten drives in several times that somebody had taken to best buy and nowhere else, and had those drives labeled various major data recovery labs. That sounds to me like they are running a software product on a failing drive. I have somebody send a drive to me and they tell me that exact story, they took it to best buy, and they told them that there were too many bad sectors and they could only get back some of the data, and it had to be sent out. In the tech world, the only thing Best Buy is good for is making every other service, even the lousy ones, look good. That means that what would have been a relatively simple lab recovery, often turns into a nightmare that is unrecoverable or nearly so. One of the biggest problems with geek squad data recovery, is that it only gets sent out after their technicians have tried to beat the shit out of your drive using a software product to recover your data. They don't run sleazy marketing and advertise bullshit tools/services like Gillware, they aren't as overpriced and hype heavy as Drive Savers.ĭon't ever do business with Best Buy again if you can avoid it. They're easily my favorite of the large national outfits. I don't know if it's a different class of service from a normal Ontrack recovery, because I do hear about a lower success rate. What geek squad calls a level 3 means they drop it in a box and send it to Ontrack.
